Tomorrow is March 1. I repeat, tomorrow is already March 1st!! Why is this a big deal to me? Well, it happens to be the perfect storm of my favorite ingredients for timing on goal setting.
It is a Sunday, which is the beginning of a new week so the best time to prep and start plan implementation. It is also the first day of a new month, which makes it easier to remember, oh yeah I started such and such habit on March 1, and this has been the result.
So in honor of this perfect storm of timing, I thought I’d share a few of my goal setting tips that you can use to get to a healthier, happier you. I will warn you I wrap several little tips into more of a category, but it is how I think.
1. Get over it.
The times I have made the biggest changes are when I just was over being something. When I started lifting weights I was completely over someone telling me, don’t lift that, ask for help to move this, you’re not strong enough for…
So over it.
When you’re over something, like really really over something, that’s when you’re ready to make the change.
Another example is when, a few jobs ago, I felt so restless and trapped in a job and every day was just another step toward negative land, USA. I didn’t want to be that person, so I got over playing the victim and decided to make some changes.
2. Follow the SMART objectives.
Specific – I want to lose weight. What? That’s not a goal. Be specific.
Measurable – The analyst in me is screaming “put a number to it”. And let me take it one step further on my soap box…please stop saying “I want to weigh xxx lbs”. Can we all agree that body fat is more important than weight? You want to be a certain lean body mass. Wayyyy more important.
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time bound
Be realistic. I will never be a super model. That’s not a goal I have. But I sure as heck can get down to xx% body fat, get xxx number of certifications, etc.
3. Trust the Process
No big goals are achieved without a plan. No big goals are achieved overnight. Pick your goal, make your plan or find someone who can help you make the plan to get there, and then trust each baby step that it takes to get you there. We are a people who require instant gratification, but that’s not how the big goals are achieved!
Okay so those are three of the pieces that help me in my goal setting puzzle. In honor of March 1st day (which I totally made up), take a minute and step back to reflect on all of the changes you have been mulling over for the last few months, set that goal, and make your plan to make it happen!
Happy March 1st everyone!!
